Renting a home in Kenya is mostly straightforward, and the parts that are not tend to become apparent in the second month. This is what to establish before you commit.
At the viewing
Water. Ask how it is supplied and how often it fails. Is there a borehole? A tank? How many days does the tank last? "We rarely have problems" is not an answer — ask when it last went out.
Power. Check whether the unit is on a prepaid or postpaid meter, and whose name it is in. Ask about the backup arrangement, if any.
Run the taps and flush the toilets. In every bathroom. Pressure problems are obvious in ten seconds and invisible in photographs.
Look at the ceiling corners. Water stains mean a roof or plumbing problem that somebody has painted over rather than fixed.
Check phone signal inside the unit, not on the balcony.
Visit twice if you can — once during the day and once in the evening. Noise, security and parking are entirely different at eight in the evening.
